I could tell you stories about bloating, or lead into this post with a relatable anecdote about how big my belly gets when I'm basically a human balloon. But I'm not going to do that because frankly, indigestion and bloating are neither interesting nor sexy.

So instead, I'll tell you this: when you feel all bloated and gassy, it's usually because whatever you ate is taking a very long time to digest. So long, in fact, that it's fermenting in your belly. Totally gross, right?

Some people experience bloating after eating lots of meat, others after eating dairy, and some after nomming on a whole ton of fibrous veggies. Whatever the original food source, the key to eliminating (pun totally intended) your bloat is to get your digestive system moving. Enter turmeric, ginger, fennel, and lemon--a quad of super stomach ingredients that each help alleviate bloating in their own way. Turmeric helps ease abdominal pain and balance stomach acid. Ginger pushes gas through your digestive tract and alleviates cramping. Fennel helps your stomach produce bile to digest, and lemon prevents heartburn and helps your stomach empty. Stew these four ingredients together in some water and you have a surprisingly yummy tonic that will help your belly feel better in no time.

1 cup water

1/4 tsp  turmeric

1/4 tsp ground ginger (or a thumb-sized knob of fresh ginger, peeled)

1/4 cup fennel fronds and bulb (or 1 tsp fennel seed)

Juice from 1/2 large lemon

Combine ingredients in a small saucepan and simmer for 5 minutes. Cool slightly then sip slowly. You may add a small amount of honey if desired.
