With all the b.s. in the news about women's reproductive care, we thought to ourselves, "What can we do to get women talking about things that are usually shameful?" The first thing that came to mind? All the stuff we buy and use constantly on our vaginas! We all have a secret stash of stuff but no one talks about it! Especially disheartening? A lot of products out there are not-so-good-for-you and loaded with ingredients that can actually really complicate your below the belt situation. We reached out to some of the women in our lives to find out what natural feminine products they use to feel their best.
Natracare Tampons: Most tampons are made from chlorine-bleached cotton and rayon, which can still hold on to residual chemicals leftover from the bleaching process. Rayon, while highly absorbent, can also be irritating and disrupt your natural moisture balance. Natracare's tampons are made from 100% organic cotton and totally chlorine and rayon free so you can feel good about what you're putting in your bod.
Sliquid Lubricant: Ahhh, lube. It's usually loaded with sugar-based glycerin and parabens. Glycerin can be an especially troublesome ingredient for those prone to yeast infections. And parabens? Sorry, but why would you put parabens in your hoo-ha? These preservatives have been shown to mimic estrogen and bio-accumulate in the body--a very worrying sign for those of us concerned about breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Sliquid's lubes are totally free of these harmful components and made with sensitive women in mind. They even have a totally organic line!
Contragel Green Spermicide: Ladies that use a diaphragm or cervical cap know that spermicide can be a not-so-fun thing to have all up in your business. Contragel does not contain N-9 (the main ingredient in most spermicides), a detergent that can greatly irritate your skin and actually make it more likely for you to contract an STD. It's also non-toxic and gluten-free!
Coconut Oil: We both see the same doctor and when we told her that we were going to write a post about natural feminine products, she smiled and exclaimed, "Coconut Oil! It's natural! You can get it organic! And it's a great lube!" Our trusty doc loves it, and now we love it too.
Sustain Condoms: Did you know that latex is actually natural? It's made from rubber! These GMO-free, fair trade, vegan condoms are made sustainably and lubricated with an organic, glycerin and petrochemical-free formula! Oh, and the company gives 10% of its profits to organizations that support female reproductive healthcare in the U.S. Girl power!
Chakrubs: You guys--it's a dildo made out of crystal. We've heard great things about these. Oh, and they're really pretty. According the website, "crystals have perfect molecular structures that have positive effects on our electromagnetic fields. When our energetic bodies are at ease, we are at ease. We are open to healing, to peace, to love, to all of life's pleasures." Pretty cool, no?
