Getting my ridgeback, Opie, has been one of the most rewarding adventures I have ever taken. Sure, I sound a bit like a crazy dog lady, but it's true! And for those of you with pups of your own, I am sure you would agree. These guys quickly become your dearest companions and you can't imagine life without them.
When it comes to purebreds of any type, particularly Rhodesian Ridgebacks, food allergies can be a difficulty. For Ope, savory store bought goodies often result in a terrifying case of hives. To combat the allergies, I have picked up preparing his food and treats myself and it is quite awesome. The technique goes something like this: throw everything in a pot, cook, done. This recipe from Natural Dog Magazine is just as easy. Opie loves them. Admittedly, I tasted one too and despite their lack of buttery goodness and desert-dry crunch, they are pretty good.
So get to the kitchen and treat your pups, happy Monday!
1 cup quick-cooking oats, uncooked
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup low-fat cheddar cheese, shredded
4 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
Combine ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Using a rolling pin, roll out dough on a floured surface, approximately 1/2 inch thick. Cut out dough pieces using cookie cutters on a non-greased cookie sheet. Bake for 50-60 minutes. Turn off heat and keep treats in the oven for at least two hours to harden. Serve!
